Social Media Trends for the New Year

Tomorrow marks December, which means there’s just a quick 31 more days until we hit 2017! It’s clear now that social media marketing is here to stay. With new technology and constant updates, social media has remained mainstream and changed to adapt to all of the newest trends. 2017 will be yet another year full of new surprises and tech updates that will bring people together and up to speed through the everyday use of social media. So what does that mean for us?

Live in the moment: Live content vs. disappearing content. Snapchat (now Snap) has brought its users together through a moment-focused view of communication where people could send snippets of things happening or share live content. Instagram adapted that very concept while creating Instagram Stories where users can share fresh, new, live content with their followers. Facebook then took “live” to a whole new meaning by integrating Facebook Live where users can share real-time videos with the Facebook community, further solidifying video and live moment content. With such a big presence on social media, us marketers need to hop on the bandwagon if we haven’t already because this outlet is huge and in.

Pay to Play: “Organic” has lost its visibility moving into the new year. That’s because with so many pushed content through the advertising features on all the social media platforms, its hard for content to get the reaches and engagements that matter most without a little boost from the penny. With an increasing needs for companies to dabble in paid advertising, social platforms face more pressure to stay relevant amongst its competitors forcing them to come up with more ingenious and creative advertising options for businesses. So at least we’ll get to see some fun ads throughout the social scape.

VR: There’s been a buzz about virtual reality for a while now but it never quite happens. What you don’t realize is that the tech world took a huge leap towards virtual reality in 2016 with Pokémon Go using augmented reality. There still needs to be some work done on the practical application of these technologies, but we’re definitely bound do see some brands experimenting with it in the new year.

Visuals: Whether it be through videos, gifs, or artistic pictures, social media grabbed our attention through visual images. Images catch our attention and we tend to linger longer on video content. So if you haven’t started already, grab your camera and start filming! Try to include images with every post you make across any of your social platform to stay in focus and retain engagement.

With all that said, I’m super excited to see what 2017 has in store for us and can’t wait to start implementing these trendy social media bits.
